The country has made significant progress in health, education, employment and other sectors during the last nine years of of UPA government. In a major public health achievement, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) witnessed annual fall of three per cent since 2008. As per the report of the Registrar General of India, the IMR declined from 53 per one thousand live births in 2008 to 44 per one thousand live births in 2011. HIV infections rate also witnessed an overall reduction of an estimated 57 per cent, particularly among the adult population.Reflecting the impact of scaled up prevention and intervention strategies the new infections reduced from 2.74 lakh in 2000 to 1.16 lakh in 2011. Not even a single case of wild polio has been reported in the country since January 2011 owing to extensive immunization efforts.
