The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange rose 55 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 18,774, today, after Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s assurance that the Reserve Bank will take action to stem the rupee’s slide when necessary. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange gained 12 points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,668.
But stock markets in China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore fell between 0.3 percent and 1.7 percent.
